NMSU Foundation’s Dr. Sylvia Y. Acosta Named NM History Maker for Advocacy, Leadership

The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Foundation announced that Sylvia Y. Acosta ’10, CEO of the Foundation, has been named a History Maker by the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program.

Since the 1600s, women have shaped New Mexico’s history as artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Their contributions are honored through the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program, which features more than 100 roadside markers celebrating the visionaries and everyday heroes who continue to inspire.

The program also recognizes living women making a lasting impact across the state. Acosta is among eight honorees selected this year for their influence in their communities, counties, and New Mexico as a whole. Known for her advocacy for underserved communities and dedication to student success, Acosta has strengthened the NMSU Foundation by expanding its impact, enhancing operations, and fostering key university partnerships.

“I am honored to be recognized alongside the incredible women who have shaped New Mexico’s history,” Acosta said. “This is a tribute to education, advocacy, and community. My hope is that it inspires future generations to lead with passion and uplift others along the way.”

A ceremony at the Roundhouse on March 6 will honor Acosta and her fellow History Makers in celebration of National Women’s History Month. Featured in New Mexico Magazine’s March issue and nominated by New Mexicans, this year’s honorees demonstrate resilience, leadership, and a lasting impact across various fields.

The event will recognize their contributions and highlight the ongoing influence of women in shaping the state’s future. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and other supporters of the program are scheduled to speak at this public celebration of women in the Capitol rotunda, 2-3:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

“On behalf of the NMSU Foundation Board, I congratulate Dr. Sylvia Acosta on being named a History Maker,” said Louis A. Vega, Board chair. “This recognition highlights her exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment to students, and advocacy for our communities. We look forward to her continued contributions to NMSU and the state of New Mexico.”

New Mexico’s Official Scenic Historic Markers program began in 1935, but for decades, women’s contributions remained overlooked. That changed in 2006 with an initiative led by the International Women’s Forum-New Mexico, in partnership with the state legislature and governor, enabling the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program.
