The New Mexico State University Foundation today launched Make a Splash for the Alumni Pond!, a crowdfunding campaign to revitalize the Alumni Pond, a campus landmark where students, alumni and community members have gathered for more than 50 years to fish, picnic, take family photos and enjoy a quiet escape in the heart of campus.
After months of reconstruction, the Alumni Pond is expected to reopen to the public in June, restoring a central campus gathering space while work continues to rebuild its ecosystem. As aquatic vegetation becomes established, water levels may fluctuate and conditions will continue to evolve through 2027.
The NMSU Board of Regents approved $1.3 million for reconstruction of the pond, including the reintroduction of fish and wildlife to the restored ecosystem. Construction began in July 2025. The Foundation is now seeking additional support to enhance the surrounding area with native trees, picnic tables, paving bricks and space for approximately 10 benches.

The reconstructed pond will reach 14 feet at its deepest point, creating a more stable and resilient aquatic environment. Water used in the pond is fully accounted for within NMSU’s existing water rights, reflecting the university’s commitment to responsible resource management. Fish will not be introduced immediately as the pond undergoes an ecological establishment phase. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish’s Las Cruces office will assist with water quality testing and oversee fish stocking.
The project includes approximately 700 cubic yards of concrete, roughly equivalent to the amount used to build seven houses. The concrete is reinforced with fiberglass and metal to increase flexibility and durability, supporting the pond’s long-term performance.
“The pond’s restoration is both an investment in the student experience and a commitment to sustainability,” said Berta Zubiate, NMSU university architect. “It enhances beauty, ecological health and serves as a living laboratory while ensuring long-term durability.”
Donors have several ways to contribute, including opportunities to honor a loved one through memorial features such as engraved bricks, benches, trees and picnic tables. Each option offers a lasting way to be part of the pond’s renewal.
Originally built in the 1970s and affectionately known as the “Duck Pond,” the Alumni Pond was closed last year following a significant water loss. The original liner, more than 45 years old, is being fully replaced as part of the reconstruction. The university engaged a national engineering firm specializing in water resources to evaluate and address the issue.
The revitalization will also expand the pond’s role beyond recreation. NMSU Facilities and Services is partnering with the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences’ Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology to provide hands-on learning opportunities, similar to those at the turtle pond near Knox Hall.
